Tremendous growth in eastside communities over the last decade increased the demand for power. Existing transmission lines needed to be upgraded as a result. The Watershed Company arborists and ecologists traversed the 16-mile power line corridor, including more than 400 parcels, inventorying trees, wetlands, streams, and wildlife habitat. Complex three-dimensional GIS analysis enabled the team to predict which trees were likely to interfere with new lines by considering ground elevation, maximum tree height, and anticipated power line sag.
Proposed landscape design challenged the misconception that utility corridors and easements are single-use infrastructure. The Watershed Company’s approach included landscapes that are multi-functioning, like green space and habitat corridors capable of serving as community assets. Additionally, feasibility studies were conducted to investigate other public-benefit amenities such as soft-surface trails, exercise stations, playgrounds, and food forests.
Proposed plants were selected based on compatibility with utilities and prioritizing edible,
pollinator-friendly, and low-growing native plant species. In addition to improving ecological function and adding community value, new plantings are expected to reduce annual corridor maintenance costs long-term.
